The Taranaki men’s team travelled to Masterton to take on Wairarapa in the first round of the Furlong Cup.
With play delayed until after lunch on the first day Taranaki captain Mattie Thomas won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Hāwera’s left arm seamer Ethan Keller picked up an early wicket however the Wairarapa batsmen played aggressively on a difficult wicket chancing their luck.
Wairarapa surprisingly declared at 176 for seven for the wickets shared around with Ben Frewin picking up two for 36.
The Taranaki batsman faced 21 overs finishing on 47 for three with Liam Muggeridge holding the top order together with 34 not out.
After heavy overnight rain, play was delayed on the second day and with the weather improving the covers were finally removed however the surrounds and run-ups were affected and with no chance of drying the umpires decided to call the game off at 1pm.
Taranaki will now concentrate on the white ball with the Chapple Cup commencing on Friday 20th November.
Taranaki Cricket would like to acknowledge the services of Thelma Luxton who at the weekend commenced her 50 season in a row scoring for Taranaki.
